About mud motor long tail

Long tail mud motor kits are specialized products designed for navigating areas with submerged obstacles. Different designs of long tail kits can cater to different desires.

Components and applications of long tail mud motor kits

A long tail mud motor kit consists of an engine, drive shaft, propeller, control lever and handle, mounting bracket and other accessories. These motors have a long, slender driveshaft with a propeller at the end. The extended driveshaft allows the motor to operate in very shallow water and muddy terrains, making it an excellent choice for activities like fishing and hunting. Various choices of long tail kits provide the flexibility to customize a watercraft with the ideal long tail mud motor shaft and engine, such as the 6.5HP, 13 HP, 16 HP, 22 HP, 23HP, or 35 HP long tail mud motors, to ensure optimal performance in different conditions. Long tail motor kits are very useful for various activities, whether it's fishing, waterfowl hunting, or exploratory adventures. These motors excel in challenging environments. Their primary advantage is their ability to traverse through shallow waters, marshes, and areas with submerged obstacles, where conventional outboard engines would be hindered. However, it is important to note that mud motor engines are not designed to run in salt water, so steering in salt water should be avoided.

Depth and speed of long tail mud motor kits

Engines of long tail kits need about 9 to 10 inches of soft bottom (water, mud, vegetation) to start from a standstill. That can be 1 inch of water and 8 inches of mud, etc. Once the boat is on plane, it can run in about 1/4 inch of water in soft mud or 5 inches on a hard bottom. Long tail boat motor kits are less built for speed as they are for the sly maneuvering of a duck hunt — speed averages between 20-30 mph for most stock mud motors. However, depending on the motor manufacturer, there are upgrades and higher-end engines that can reach higher speeds. Most mud motors do not feature a reverse option. With a full power reverse, it's ideal for new hunts where exploration is a high priority.

Advantages of long tail mud motor kits

Long shaft mud motor kits outperform other types of motors, like outboards and short-tail mud motors, in certain situations. For example, outboard motors don't do well in shallow water, particularly if that water has mud, muck, or other debris in it. As there's a long driveshaft which can be up to 72" long, long tail mud motor kits are easier to maneuver through tricky waters compared with short-tails. Furthermore, long-tails are typically less expensive, and they are available with smaller engines or smaller boats. This specific motor is a great balance between budget and power.
