What is a Christmas Stocking?

A Christmas stocking is an empty cloth bag in the shape of a boot that is hung up on Christmas Eve for St. Nicholas (or figures related to Santa Claus) and filled with small toys, candy, fruit, coins, or other small gifts. The Christmas boot tradition is believed to have origins in the story of St. Nicholas. In some Christmas stories, Santa Claus only delivers gifts to children inside Christmas boots. However, he also provides wrapped presents under the Christmas tree in other stories. In Western culture, it is tradition to threaten children that if they misbehave throughout the year, they will only receive a bag or lump of coal as a gift. Some people even hang their Christmas boots on the headboard posts so Santa can fill them while they sleep.

The origin of the bulk Christmas stocking is believed to be in the story of St. Nicholas. While there are no written records of the source of this Christmas item, there are folk legends that attempt to tell the story of this holiday tradition. One of the legends states that St. Nicholas, with the fortune inherited from his parents, anonymously helped those who needed it most, in this case, three sisters who did not have enough money for a dowry. St. Nicholas, upon hearing about this family, went out at nightfall and threw three bags of gold, one of which landed in a stocking (in other versions, a shoe), into the sisters' house through an open window. Different versions of the story say that St. Nicholas threw the three bags of gold directly into the stockings hanging by the fireplace drying out. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or preparing their shoes, anxiously awaiting gifts from St. Nicholas. That is why the three golden balls, sometimes depicted as oranges, are one of the symbols of St. Nicholas. This refers to the origin of the three golden balls used as a symbol of moneylenders. In this tradition that initially began in a European country, children wore one of their everyday socks, but eventually, special Christmas stockings were created for this purpose. These stockings are traditionally worn on St. Nicholas Day. However, in the early nineteenth century, they also began to be worn on Christmas Eve.

Today, stores offer various styles and sizes of Christmas boots, and they are also considered a popular homemade craft. Many families create Christmas boots with each family member's name on each boot, so Santa knows which boot belongs to which family member.

What is a Compression Stocking?

Compression stockings are specially designed to apply pressure to people's lower legs, helping to maintain blood flow and reduce discomfort and swelling. They may be prescribed by people's GP if people have a condition that causes poor blood flow in their legs, such as varicose veins (swollen and enlarged veins) or lymphoedema(when people's body's tissues swell up).

Fishnet stockings are used mainly as a type of undergarment. As much as it defines curves by applying a grid close to the body, it generally accentuates the wearer's muscular definition.
